The faculty of physical science at the University of Nigeria, Nusska is made up of five (5) departments. They are:

Mathematics

The aim of the Department is to offer programmes designed to impact a sound knowledge of all branches of Mathematics to students. Courses are offered in all the core areas of Mathematics as well as in Applicable Mathematics. The programmes help students to develop the necessary skills and intellectual, mental and moral training for a career in Mathematics and other related fields.
The Department is inclined to produce B.Sc. degree holders that can compete favourably with any other B.Sc. Degree holder in Mathematics from any part of the Globe, and can pursue higher degrees in Mathematical Sciences anywhere in the World. Recently many innovations have been made in the programme to accommodate the fast-growing demands in information technology, banking and oil industries.
As the mother and language of all sciences, the Department aims to adequately service the faculties of Engineering, Physical Sciences, Pharmaceutical sciences, Medicals Sciences, Environmental Studies, Business Administration etc. Since the current trend in technology, engineering and life sciences emphasizes actual quantification, the programme of our department embraces application in all these areas of human endeavour.
Recognizing the role of mathematics as a basic tool in the physical and engineering sciences, and the current developments in the social and life sciences which have now become increasingly quantitative, the mathematics undergraduate academic programme emphasize the applications of theory and methods to real-life and physical problems.  It helps the student to establish expertise in Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, or Industrial Mathematics.  It also prepares him for graduate study in the mathematical sciences.

Computer Science

The Computer Science discipline is unique because it provides a focus on the convergence of technologies. Its uniqueness naturally defines its role and dictates its increasing relevance in several disciplines and modern practices and techniques. The scope of application of computer science in the modern scientific and technological context is, therefore, infinitely wide. Students are equipped in the Department and are thus encouraged to function, research and engage in collaborative projects in wide professional contexts.

Physics and Astronomy

The aim of the Department of Physics is to offer programmes designed to impact a sound knowledge of all branches of physics to the students. Courses are offered in Mechanics and properties of matter, Thermal Physics, Waves, Electromagnetism and Electronics, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Experimental Physics, etc. The programmes help students to develop the necessary skills and intellectual and mental training for a career as a physicist.

Pure and Industrial Chemistry

Chemistry is the index of industrial development. The giant strides made by man in the understanding and exploitation of nature, the synthesis of new materials essential to the enhancement of the quality of life, and the surge in and sustenance of economic and technological progress have benefited immensely from Chemistry. It is very important in modern science and technology and essential for the material progress of the world. Chemistry products are used in one form or another in practically every other industry before eventually emerging as part of our daily lives.

Statistics

The science of Statistics concerns the development and application of the most effective methods of collecting, analyzing and interpreting data in such a way that the fallibility of conclusions and estimates can be assessed by means of logical reasoning based on the mathematics of probability. It deals with designing of experiments and surveys, testing hypotheses, and studying relationships among two or more variables, among other scientific methods. These methods have wide application in such diverse fields as industry, business, government, educational institutions, agriculture, meteorology and astronomy, engineering medicine, social sciences and the liberal arts.
