What is Coronavirus (Covid-19)?

Coronavirus COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that affects the respiratory system (the throat, and lungs).

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are normally transmitted between animals and people. COVID-19 is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. It is spread through contact with an infected person or contaminated surface.

Most patients will have only mild symptoms. Severe illness is mostly experienced in the elderly and those with chronic conditions.

According to the @WHO, common signs of Coronavirus include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. Report immediately to the nearest health facility if you notice any of them’

The virus that causes COVID-19 is not airborne. Based on studies, droplets that spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, land on nearby surfaces. People can also catch coronavirus if they breathe in these droplets. This is why it is important to stay at least 2 meters away from a person who is coughing or sneezing.

Maintain a social distance of 2 meters always & if you are ill wear a face mask to avoid infecting others. Also clean all surfaces like door handles, stair rails, and tables frequently. COVID-19 can live on these surfaces and be contracted after touching them and then touching your face.

Can Coronavirus be Transmitted in countries with hot weather?

From the evidence so far, the virus causing COVID-19 can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather.

Does treatment exist for COVID-19?

No, there is no specific treatment yet for the disease. However, many of the symptoms can be managed through supportive care.

Is there a Vaccine For Coronavirus Covid-19?

Yes, but there is no specific treatment for the disease.

Can drinking/gargling with salt water or vinegar protect me from COVID-19?

NO. Doing this can be harmful. To protect yourself and your loved ones, practice proper personal and respiratory hygiene.

Most people with #COVID19 experience mild illness and recover. Protect yourself by handwashing, avoiding contact with sick people, and other practices in our public health advisory

The following DO NOT protect against COVID-19:  Instead, they can be harmful.

1. Consuming hot lemon, palm oil, ginger, or garlic

2. Gargling with saltwater

3. Drinking or spraying Dettol on your body

What does self-isolation mean?

Self-isolation is an important way of controlling the spread of COVID-19. It means that anyone who is returning to Nigeria must stay at home and in strict isolation from their families for 14 days. This is to limit contact with people and protect yourself and your loved ones.

What does social distancing mean?

This is an effective strategy to reduce physical interaction between people towards delaying and reducing the widespread of COVID-19 in a community.

This measure involves strict adherence to;

  •  Non-contact greetings (avoiding shaking of hands and hugs)
  • Maintaining at least 2 meters (5 feet) physical distance between yourself and individuals and;
  • Closure of activities that will cause any form of gathering including schools, houses of worship, and social events.

How do I report a person who has refused to self-isolate

Can I visit a nearby health facility if I develop symptoms?

No. You must stay indoors and avoid contact with everyone to limit the spread of the disease. The State Ministry of Health supported by NCDC will arrange for sample collection and transportation to the laboratory.

Am I at risk of catching COVID-19 from a package or products that arrive from countries with a confirmed case(s)?

Currently, there is no evidence to support the transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods or packages in countries with confirmed case(s). To date, there is no known case of COVID-19 in Nigeria associated with imported goods.

What should I do if am pregnant?

Currently, there is no evidence that pregnant women are at higher risk of infection or complications from COVID-19. However, due to changes that may occur during pregnancy, pregnant women are advised to stay at home and adhere strictly to social distancing measures at all times.

Pregnant women are advised to always practice hand and respiratory hygiene to reduce the risk of getting infected with COVID-19 and are advised to call their health facility for more information regarding antenatal care provision.
