Infertility is a serious challenge in many homes and has caused separation in several families. Infertility can be caused by several factors, either from the man or the woman. You can read more on this here.

In this write-up, I would like to share a few ways you might be damaging your Sperm or its production without even knowing it. They include;

  1. Tight underwear
  2. Hot baths
  3. Infections
  4. Varicoceles
  5. Laptops
  6. Drugs
  7. Mobile phones
  8. Smoking
  9. Marijuana
  10. Steroids

Tight Underwear

Putting on very tight pants and underwear can increase the temperature in the scrotal area, which is unhealthy for your Sperm. It may kill already produced Sperm and reduce your body’s production of Sperm. To prevent this, you should use loose underwear instead of tight pants. Our parents were used to tying wrappers in the past and hardly had these issues.
Ladies, ensure your man goes to bed naked if you want him to become a father.

As explained before, Wearing tight underwear like pants or shorts keeps your testicles closer to the body, leading to warmer temperatures that may kill sperm and lower sperm count.

Hot baths

most people love a hot water bath, but why it is fun, it is not healthy for your little guys down there. Hot water baths also expose the body to heat, which is not good for the production of Sperm, and frequently doing this may cause low sperm count. Same thing with men who often use saunas. It is advisable to have cold or warm water bathe.

Infections

Infections are always a concern wherever you find them, causing various health problems for both men and women. Some Infections have been known to affect the production or storage of Sperm. These Infections of the genital organs, e.g., mumps, orchitis, epididymitis, etc., block sperm production or passage in the Vas. This can be caused by untreated and longstanding gonorrhoea, leading to permanent damage to the testis and hence infertility.

Varicoceles

Varicoceles are the veins’ swelling that takes blood away from the testis. It is a common cause of low sperm count and infertility in men in our environment, and it is mostly ignored.
Sperm cells are very fragile. Accumulation of blood in an area causes increased temperature in that area. When this happens in varicoceles, the rise in temperature inside the testis may kill the Sperm or reduce sperm quality. Make an appointment with your urologist today for a check-up and to treat your varicoceles.

Laptops

Although it is rightly called a laptop, it does not mean we should always use it on our laps. The heat generated by a laptop in use is very much; when you constantly place this amount of heat on your lap, it may disrupt Sperm production and cause irreversible changes in your male reproductive function. Practice the habit of using your laptop on a table instead.

Drugs/Medications

Drugs/Medications: Some common legal and illegal drugs can affect sperm production. Examples of these include;

  • drugs for the management of Hypertension (high blood pressure), e.g.; Atenolol
  • NSAIDs for pain, like Sulfasalazine
  • drugs for Cancer affect all rapidly growing cells like sperm and blood cells.
  • Others are cocaine and many herbal medications.

See a doctor before taking any drugs.

Mobile phones

There have been suggestions and evidence recently that the heat and radiation from our mobile phones can be enough to cause damage to the Sperm. Hence, it is best to keep mobile phones as far away from the testes as possible. Rather than put your phone in your front pocket as is commonly done, you can practice holding it in your hands or putting it in your back pocket.

Smoking

Like alcohol, smoking can cause damage to the Sperm and lead to low sperm count. It can also cause problems with erections. Smoking has been suspected to reduce the Sperm’s ability to swim actively to fertilize a woman’s egg. Quit smoking today if you have challenges of infertility.

Marijuana

Regular consumption of marijuana in any form (whether cooked, smoked, snorted, etc.) can reduce your sperm count. This is because marijuana reduces the amount of testosterone in the body. Testosterone is a hormone found in the body of a man that makes him a man. The testis needs it to produce Sperm.

Steroids

The steroid is a commonly abused medication today, especially by bodybuilders who want to improve their muscles as well as by drug addicts. These steroids, when abused, can affect the production of Sperm by affecting testosterone production. This leads to decreased sperm production and hence, low sperm count.
Stop steroid abuse today.

Remember that infertility can be a result of either male or female factors. Avoiding these dangers will improve your sperm count, motility, viability and overall fertility.
